Once I Caught a Fish Alive lyrics

Sing along

One, two, three, four, five,Once I caught a fish alive.Six, seven, eight, nine, ten,Then I let it go again.

Why did you let it go?Because it bit my finger so!Which finger did it bite? This little finger on my right!

About the rhyme

Once I Caught a Fish Alive is a traditional counting rhyme that has been sung to young children for more than two hundred years. The first verse counts from one to ten, and the second is a little question-and-answer about a fish that bit a finger. Hold up a finger for each number, then wiggle your little finger on the last line.

What children learn

  • Counting from 1 to 10 in order
  • Matching numbers to fingers
  • Question and answer, and taking turns
  • Left and right (which finger was it?)

Play the rhyme

In our Fish Catching game the rhyme keeps going, with a new verse that counts all the way to 15:

Eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen,The biggest fish I've ever seen!It waved its tail and swam away,I'll catch it on another day!
