Five little ducks went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”But only four little ducks came back.
Four little ducks went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”But only three little ducks came back.
Three little ducks went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”But only two little ducks came back.
Two little ducks went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”But only one little duck came back.
One little duck went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”But none of the five little ducks came back.
Sad Mother Duck went out one day,Over the hills and far away.Mother Duck said, “Quack, quack, quack, quack,”And all of the five little ducks came back!
About the rhyme
5 Little Ducks is a counting-down rhyme: one duck wanders off in every verse until Mother Duck goes looking and all five come home. Hold up five fingers and fold one down each verse, then pop them all back up for the happy ending.
What children learn
- Counting backwards from 5 to 0
- Taking one away (early subtraction)
- Predicting what comes next in a pattern
- A happy ending after a sad moment
